At a distance of 26 km from Panjim Kadamba Bus Stand, 42 km from Vasco Da Gama Railway Station and 31 km from Margao Railway Station, Shri Navadurga Temple is situated in North Goa.
Shri Navdurga temple is situated at Madkai which is in Ponda Taluka. The Temple is dedicated to the Goddess Navadurga. The diety is originally brought from Ganvshi village in the Tiswadi Taluka. The temple is almost 500 years old and was renovated in 1603 AD.
The presiding deity worshipped at the Navdurga temple is a fierce form of goddess Durga known as the Mahishasuramardini. The stone idol of the Goddess placed on a raised platform in the Garbhagriha of the temple. The idol is in standing position and is four feet tall. The goddess neck is slightly bent to the left. The deity in her form is highly venerated in Goa. Lord Ganesh, Betala, Narayana, Grampurush and Ravalnath are the other deities worshipped at this temple.
The Palakhi (palanquin) of Navadurga is taken out on Shukla Navami of every month. Thousands of people gather at this temple during the month of November (Hindu month of Kartika) from Vidya Chaturthi to Dashami for the annual Jatra. Another festival that is celebrated here with great pomp is Navaratri.
