At a distance of 28 km from Panjim Kadamba Bus Stand, 23 km from Vasco Da Gama Railway Station and 12 km from Margao Railway Station, Mae de Deus Church is situated in South Goa.
Mae de Deus Church also known as Mother of God Church is located 2 km from Majorda Beach. Mae De Deus Church is one of the prominent sightseeing attractions in Goa. The Church was established in 1588 by Jesuits. The Church of Majorda was made a parish church during the tenure of Archbishop Aleixo de Menezes. The Church was set on fire by the Marathas in April 1738 and it was rebuilt in 1739.
The Church exhibits the Gothic style of architecture and is dedicated to the Mother of God. According to one legend, a wooden box with the image of Mother of God was laid under cornerstone of the Temple. Earlier in Majorda village there was a Hindu Temple which was dedicated to the Great Mother - Mamay.
The Church is celebrating two festivals one is on 5th May and the second one 'Boa Morte festival' is on the 1st Sunday of October with great pomp.
In the Church Premises the statue of local lad Joaquim Fernandes, who won a Gold medal at Republic Day race in New Delhi is present.
