Bharatiya Lok Kala Mandal is a cultural institution dedicated to the exploration and promotion of folk art, culture, songs, and festivals from the regions of Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Madhya Pradesh. It was founded by Padma Shri awardee Late Devi Lal Samar in the year 1952. The prime attraction of Bharatiya Lok Kala Mandal is the museum in its premises.
The Bharatiya Lok Kala Museum showcases a remarkable array of artifacts that embody the folk culture of Rajasthan, including jewelry, puppets, masks, dolls, traditional attire, and representations of folk deities, musical instruments, and paintings. Notably, the museum features a distinctive collection of puppets from India and various countries such as France, Germany, Russia, the United States, Mexico, Indonesia, and Romania, with the water puppets from Vietnam being particularly noteworthy. Additionally, the museum offers a rich repository of information on folk and tribal cultures, highlighted by the display of various tribal dance forms, including Terah Taal, Taal, Bhawai, the Gavari dance of the Bhil tribes, Ram Leela, and Ras Leela.
Another significant highlight of Bharatiya Lok Kala Mandal is the Govind Puppet Theatre, which was inaugurated in 1985 by the then Honorable President of India, Giani Zail Singhji. Situated next to the museum, this theatre is the result of extensive research aimed at revitalizing the art of puppetry. It features daily performances of folk dance and puppetry, presented in a vibrant and engaging manner. Skilled traditional performers captivate audiences with their dynamic and colorful displays, ensuring an immersive experience for all attendees.
