At a distance of 14 km from Udaipur, Badi Lake is an artificial freshwater lake situated at Badi village near Udaipur. It is one of the famous places to visit near Udaipur.
Badi Lake was constructed in the village of Badi by Maharana Raj Singh I (1652-1680) to counteract the devastating effects of a famine. He named the lake Jiyan Sagar in honor of his mother, Jana Devi. Over the years, it has evolved into a beloved landmark, appreciated for both its historical importance and practical benefits. The lake was particularly significant during the drought of 1973, serving as an essential water supply source for the residents of Udaipur.
Spanning an area of 155 square kilometers, the lake features an embankment that is 180 meters long and 18 meters wide, adorned with three elegant chhatris. There is no commercial activity permitted on the lake, which, along with its expansive surroundings and tranquil atmosphere, makes Badi Lake a perfect retreat for those seeking respite from the city's hustle and bustle. Swimming in the lake's fresh waters is a favored pastime for both locals and visitors, and it also serves as an excellent picnic location.
There is also a crocodile shaped hill called 'Bahubali' near the Badi Lake that is a major attraction at the place. A short trek leads to the hilltop, which has recently gained popularity among tourists. From this vantage point, visitors can have a mesmerizing aerial view of the surroundings, and also the scintillating sunrise and sunset views. The trek is rather tricky so it is advisable not to take children along.
The optimal times to visit Badi Lake are early in the morning or during sunset. In the morning, the first rays of sunlight illuminate the blue waters, creating a picturesque scene. At sunset, the sky transforms into a vibrant palette, beautifully reflecting in the lake.
