Bhandarej, Jaipur - Timings, History, Best Time to Visit

At a distance of 32 km from Abhaneri, and 73 km from Jaipur, Bhandarej is an ancient town in the Dausa district of Rajasthan. Located on the Jaipur-Agra highway, it is one of the offbeat heritage sites near Jaipur as well as Alwar.

Bhandarej is a lively and vibrant location, distinguished by its stunning stone monuments. Renowned for its scenic allure and captivating landscapes, Bhandarej was formerly referred to as Bhadrawati and is believed to have origins dating back to the Mahabharata era. Its historical roots can be traced to the 11th century, when the Kachhawa chieftain Dhula Rao triumphed over the Bargujars and conquered Bhandarej.

This site holds immense historical importance and is home to numerous ancient temples. Among the notable attractions in Bhandarej are the Bara Baoli and the Bhadrawati Palace. Also known as Bhandarej Baodi, the Bara Baoli is a remarkable five-story stepwell constructed in 1732. Exemplifying traditional Indian architectural style, it features exquisite carvings of various animals and birds.

Adjacent to the Bara Baoli, visitors can appreciate the grandeur of the Bhadrawati Palace. This palace, which dates back to the 11th century, was built by Dhula Rao Saheb following his conquest of Bhandarej. Its architecture reflects a blend of Mughal and Rajput influences. Currently, the palace has been transformed into a heritage hotel, allowing guests to experience a taste of royal living. Additionally, there exists a secret tunnel that links the stepwell to the palace. The region is also well-known for its carpet-making craftsmanship.
