The National War Museum, also referred to as the Southern Command Museum, is located within the grounds of the National War Memorial, which honors the martyrs of post-Independence war. It stands as the sole war memorial in South Asia that is entirely funded by contributions from the public. This museum was built in 1997 by the citizens of Pune who formed a war memorial fund to keep it financially stable.

The museum focuses on the history and accomplishments of the Southern Command Wing of the Indian Army. Its exhibits detail the history of the Southern Command, the battles they have engaged in, the honors they have received, the changes in their geographical distribution, and the prominent generals and distinguished personnel within the army. Significant emphasis is placed on the Indo-China War and the Bangladesh War of 1971. Additionally, the museum displays various equipment utilized by the Southern Command throughout the years, including uniforms, ammunition, vehicles, tanks, and firearms.

Outdoor exhibits feature tanks and military aircraft, including a MiG-23BN that participated in the Kargil War and a replica of the decommissioned frigate INS Trishul, which played a role in the Liberation of Goa and the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. The museum also includes a corridor showcasing the significant flags of the Indian Army, a movie theater, an ammunition gallery, and a functional paintball area for visitors to hone their aiming and shooting skills. The names of martyrs from various conflicts are inscribed on the walls throughout the museum.
