At a distance of 110 km from Pune, Devkund Waterfall is a beautiful waterfall located near Bhira, in the Raigad district of Maharashtra. It is one of the most stunning waterfalls near Pune.
Devkund Waterfall is a hidden gem located deep within the forests surrounding the Bhira Dam. The waterfall is the convergence of three waterfalls and is believed to be the source of the Kundalika River. The waterfall plunges from a height exceeding 100 feet into a pond with a diameter of approximately 30 meters. Additionally, there is a hydroelectric power plant operated by Tata Power at Bhira.
Until recently, this location was relatively unknown to trekkers, but it has gained popularity due to the stunning waterfall nestled in the forest. The waterfall is accessible via a 5-kilometer trek from the base village of Bhira. A significant portion of the trek traverses semi-dried forests, with the river running alongside and occasionally intersecting the path. The journey from Bhira to the waterfall typically takes between 1 to 2 hours, and the trail is well-marked with directional signs at regular intervals.
It's very tempting to take a dip into the pond but local residents actively restrict visitors from approaching the waterfall due to the dangerous depth created by the powerful cascade. Locals have established a boundary line within the pond; swimming is permitted in the first half of the designated area, but access to the point where the water strikes the ground is prohibited, as the depth there reaches approximately 60 feet, and there have been instances of drowning.
The best time to visit the waterfall is from October to mid-November. The trek is closed to tourists from July to September during the peak of the monsoon season as the trek route is submerged by the backwaters of Bhira Dam.
