Empress Botanical Garden, an oasis of greenery located in the center of Pune, is positioned adjacent to the Pune Race Course. This garden was established during the era of British colonial rule and was originally known as the Soldiers Garden, as it served as a favored retreat for British officials seeking leisure and recreation. It was later renamed Empress Garden in honor of Queen Victoria, who visited the site while holding the royal mace.

Covering an expanse of 39 acres, the Empress Botanical Garden is home to a diverse collection of rare exotic and indigenous trees. Notable specimens include the towering White Shireesh (Kinai), a Banyan tree estimated to be 250 to 300 years old, as well as the Baobab, Cannonball tree, Brownia, and Christmas tree. Additionally, the garden features impressive giant climbers (lianas), such as the sprawling Maloo creeper with its thick branches and fragrant white flowers, the serpentine Pilook climber with its white inflorescence and reddish fruits, and the Garambi, known for its long pods and large seeds.

Furthermore, the garden includes a dedicated 5-acre plant nursery where a variety of saplings are cultivated for both planting within the garden and for sale to the public at affordable prices. A designated area for children is equipped with modern play equipment and a charming fountain. The palm section of the garden showcases over 150 species, with 125 being local and rare. Visitors can also explore a collection of tropical trees, a small zoo, a Nana-Nani Park for senior citizens, and a Fern house while enjoying their time in the garden.

The Empress Garden is well-known for its annual flower exhibition, Buds and Blooms. This event is celebrated for its stunning floral displays and attracts numerous visitors each year. Attendees can experience an impressive array of flowers and young plants. It is an essential event for gardening aficionados, offering valuable inspiration for garden planning.
