At a distance of 1 km from Rameswaram Railway Station, Lakshmana Theertham is a holy pond situated in Rameswaram. Located near Ramanatha Swamy Temple, it is one of the 64 sacred ponds in Rameswaram.
Rameswaram is one of the most sacred pilgrimage sites in India. This town is adorned with numerous ancient temples and sacred water bodies, among which Lakshmana Theertham stands out. It is situated in proximity to Rama Theertham, Sita Theertham, and the Panchmukhi Hanuman Temple. According to mythology, Lord Lakshmana, the sibling of Lord Rama, established a Shiva lingam at this site and worshipped Lord Shiva to absolve himself of his sins, subsequently bathing in this theertha.
Lakshmana Theertham is positioned adjacent to the temple dedicated to Lord Lakshmana. Constructed in the Dravidian architectural style, the temple features an impressive design with intricately carved pillars and numerous depictions of the Ramayana adorning its walls. Inside the temple, one can find beautifully carved idols of Lord Rama, Lord Lakshmana, and Goddess Sita. The intricate carvings within the temple reflect Lord Lakshmana's profound devotion to his brother, Lord Rama.
The pond at Lakshmana Theertham includes a mandapam at its center, encircled by water on all sides. A notable highlight of this theertham is the floating car procession that takes place during the Thaipusam festival, adding to its allure.
