Jada Theertham, Rameshwaram - Timings, Boating, Best Time to Visit

At a distance of 6 km from Rameswaram Railway Station, Jada Theertham is a holy pond situated in Rameswaram. Located on the way to Dhanushkodi, it is one of the 64 sacred ponds in Rameswaram.

The revered land of Rameswaram is home to approximately 64 theerthams, situated both on the island and its surroundings. These sacred water bodies are referenced in ancient texts, particularly the Puranas and the Ramayana. Among them, Jada Theertham stands out as a significant site. Pilgrims visiting Rameswaram often immerse themselves in this holy water to seek redemption for their previous sins.

According to legend, following the battle in Lanka which he defeated the demon Ravana, who was of Brahmin descent, Lord Rama sought to atone for his actions by offering prayers to Lord Shiva through the creation of a lingam. Prior to this worship, Lord Rama purified himself by washing his hair in this pond, which is why it is referred to as Jada Theertham, with 'Jada' meaning hair.

Adjacent to the Jada Tirtham pond lies a temple that possesses its own mythological significance. Built near a huge peepal tree, this temple enchants visitors with its architectural elegance. Despite its modest size, the temple showcases exquisite craftsmanship, particularly in its intricate lattice work. Jada Tirtham is regarded as the sole location in India where Lord Kapardisvara is venerated.
