The beach derives its name from the plentiful coconut groves in the vicinity, as 'thenga' means 'coconut' in both Tamil and Malayalam. Additionally, it is renowned for the estuary where the Tamirabharani River converges with the Arabian sea. The backwaters present a captivating view, framed by coconut trees.
