At a distance of 16 km from Cuttack Railway Station, the State Botanical Garden is a sprawling garden located inside the Nandankanan Wildlife Sanctuary in Cuttack. It is one of the prominent places to visit in Cuttack especially for nature lovers.

The State Botanical Garden spreads over an area of 75 ha in the sylvan settings of the moist deciduous forest of the sprawling green Nandankanan sanctuary hemmed between two wetlands. Established in the year 1963, it was under the management of Horticulture Department initially and was transferred to Nandankanan in the year 2006. This is one of the pioneering plant conservation and nature education center of the State. Kiakani Lake with an area about 25 ha is located inside the State Botanical Garden.

The garden covers 24 different satellite gardens and parks spread all over undulating landscapes which includes Japanese Garden, Mughal Garden, Dry Garden, Evolution Garden, Heritage Garden, Landscape Garden, Palm Garden, Bougainvillea Garden, Hibiscus Garden, Carnivorous Plant Garden, Bonsai Garden, etc. There is also a spacious glass house for housing succulent plants. One can also see a rich collection of more than 1200 cacti in the Cacti House, and more than 2000 numbers of 5 varieties of philodendron in the Philodendron House.

Spread over an area of 1.5 acres, Rosarium is the most visited part of the garden which is houses nearly 1200 Rose plants belonging to 55 varieties. Besides, Botanical Garden in Cuttack also boasts the largest orchid house of the State which spreads over an area of 5000 sq. ft and displays more than 1000 orchids of 57 varieties belonging to 37 species. The Botanical Garden also has a Children Park equipped with swings, merry-go-round, sliding chute etc.

Another attraction of Botanical Garden is Butterfly Park that has a unique landscape with 6400 butterfly dependent plants. It also has one cascading waterfall with 170 sq. ft. flowing water channel, fountains and artistic bridges. One can see more than 81 species of butterfly here. The park also contains an interpretation center that provides latest information on various aspects of butterfly. A short documentary about butterfly is an added attraction.
