At a distance of 1 km from Madurai Junction Railway Station, Kazimar Periya Pallivasal or Kazimar Big Mosque is an old mosque situated near the Periyar Bus Stand in Madurai. It is one of the top religious places to visit as part of Madurai Leisure Tour.

Constructed in 1284 AD, Kazimar Periya Pallivasal, also known as Kazimar Big Mosque, stands as the oldest mosque in the city of Madurai, Tamil Nadu. This mosque was established by Kazi Syed Tajuddin, a descendant of the Islamic prophet Muhammad, who migrated from Yemen in the 13th century and was granted this land by King Kulasekara Pandiyan. Kazimar mosque was the first Muslim place of worship in Madurai, overseen by Syed Tajuddin during his lifetime and subsequently managed by his children and descendants for over seven centuries, continuing to the present day. The mosque is currently recognized as a protected monument by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).

This sacred site is renowned for its remarkable architecture, which reflects a blend of Islamic and Dravidian styles. The interior is embellished with elaborate carvings, calligraphy, and vibrant paintings illustrating scenes from the Quran. The main prayer hall is expansive, accommodating approximately 1,500 worshippers. The mosque's exterior is characterized by a series of minarets that soar above the city skyline.

The mosque holds considerable religious significance and attracts pilgrims from various regions. It also features the Dargah of notable Hazrats of Madurai and contains the Madurai Maqbara. Within the mosque, the Kazi Syed Tajuddin Arabi Madarsa provides Arabic education to over 100 students. Furthermore, the mosque is actively involved in charitable initiatives, offering support to those in need through programs such as free medical services, food distribution, and financial aid.

Annually, the mosque celebrates its Founders Day (Urus anniversary of Kazi Syed Tajuddin) with great pomp andfervor on the 15th of Rajab, the seventh month of the Islamic calendar. Kazimar Periya Pallivasal is open to visitors of all faiths. Visitors are requested to dress respectfully and observe the mosque's rules and regulations. Non-Muslims are not allowed to enter the prayer hall during designated prayer times.
