The foundation stone of La Saleth Church was laid by a French missionary in 1863, with financial support from a Belgian woman expressing her gratitude to Our Lady of La Salette for the cure of her daughter. The church was consecrated to Our Lady of La Salette, a title of the Virgin Mary, on Easter Sunday in 1866, marking it as the first Catholic church established in Kodaikanal.

This shrine exemplifies the remarkable fusion of Tamil and French architectural styles. Its interior is notably appealing, adorned with elegant statues of Our Lady of La Salette positioned above the altar, alongside a statue of St. Joseph which were presented by the Bishop of the Grenoble Diocese in France. Additionally, the church features exquisite decorative paintings on its windows, created by a French noblewoman named Madame Coile. The church grounds also include a Pilgrim Hall, La Salette Grotto, and the Way of the Cross.
