Powai Lake, Mumbai - Timings, Boating, Best Time to Visit

At a distance of 31 km from Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, Powai Lake is an artificial lake, situated in the Powai valley of Mumbai. It is one of the best places to visit in Mumbai, especially for those who want to spend some time in solitude.

Powai Lake, situated downstream of Vihar Lake along the Mithi River, spans an area of approximately 2.1 square kilometers, with depths ranging from about 3 to 12 meters. The lake is bordered by the picturesque Hiranandani Township on one side, the opulent Renaissance Hotel on another, and the vast campus of IIT Mumbai along yet another shore. Additionally, the renowned National Institute of Industrial Engineering is located in close proximity to the lake.

Historically, Powai Lake was created in 1891 through the construction of two dams on the Mithi River, intended to serve as a reservoir for Mumbai's water supply. Unfortunately, the water quality deteriorated within a few years, rendering it unsuitable for drinking. Since 1936, the Maharashtra State Angling Association (MSAA) has been responsible for the lake's maintenance and rejuvenation, and it has been a popular site for fishing activities over the years. Presently, efforts are focused on the conservation of the Indian mahaseer within the lake.

The region surrounding Powai Lake is lush with greenery, attracting numerous migratory birds. Species such as falcons, kingfishers, and ducks frequently visit the area, making it a favored spot for birdwatchers and photographers eager to capture these vibrant creatures. Additionally, crocodiles have been observed enjoying the waters of the lake.
