Mahakali Caves, Mumbai - Timings, History, Best Time to Visit

At a distance of 20 km from Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, Mahakali Caves, also known as Kondivite Caves, is a Buddhist cave complex located in the Andheri suburb of Mumbai. It is one of the famous places to visit as part of Mumbai heritage packages.

Carved from black basalt rock between the 1st century BCE and the 6th century CE, the Mahakali Caves are thought to have functioned as monastic retreats for Buddhist monks. These caves likely derive their name from the Mahakali Hills on which they are located. They are also referred to as the Kondivite Caves, named after the adjacent village of Kondivite.

The Mahakali Caves consist of a total of nineteen rock-cut structures, categorized into two primary groups: the larger eastern group, which contains 15 caves, and the smaller western group, comprising 4 caves. Each group possesses its own distinct allure and historical importance. Most of the caves are modest and compact, with minimal carvings or decorative elements, and were served as living quarters for the monks and spaces for meditation. Notably, cave number 9 is a chaitya, housing defaced figures from Buddhist mythology along with seven representations of Buddha. In total, the Mahakali Caves have twenty entrances, with the eastern group being older than the western group. Some caves include verandahs and courtyards.

The area situated between the two groups of caves contains several fragmented tombstones. Additionally, there are intriguing rock-cut structures, including a small auditorium designed for a teacher and his students. One of the most striking aspects of the Mahakali Caves is the existence of ancient water cisterns. These cleverly designed reservoirs, carved directly into the rock, provided essential water supply for the cave inhabitants, ensuring their survival in the surrounding arid environment.
