At a distance of 3 km from Bijapur Railway Station, the Shivagiri Temple is a Hindu temple located on the Sindagi Road at Shivpur suburb of Bijapur. It is one of the must visit places as part of Bijapur honeymoon packages.
Shivagiri Temple is home to an awe-inspiring statue of Shiva, measuring 85 feet in height and 104 feet in width. Established by the T.K. Patil Banakatti Charitable Trust in 2006, this 1,500-ton statue is recognized as the second largest sitting statue of Shiva in India. It was crafted by skilled sculptors from Shimoga over a period exceeding 13 months, and the architectural design was provided by architects based in Bangalore.
Constructed with substantial amounts of steel, cement, and bricks, the statue is adorned with Rudraksha beads, each weighing 50 kg. Additionally, a serpent encircles the neck of Lord Shiva, extending 145 feet in length. A small Shiva Linga has been positioned beneath it. The temple's interior walls are engraved with 'Shiva Charite' in Kannada, allowing devotees to explore the mythological narratives associated with Shiva.
This remarkable statue of Lord Shiva serves as a captivating visual landmark and a site for spiritual reflection, as well as an architectural wonder. Each year on Maha Shivaratri, the temple attracts over 150,000 devotees. Adjacent to the temple is a serene park that offers a peaceful environment and recreational activities for both the elderly and children, including small rides, slides, and swings.
