The 54 feet high terracotta statue of Guruvayur Mahaprabhu is a creative representation of Lord Krishna in the form of a giant banyan tree that originates from traditional folk stories and tales. The term Maraprabhu translates to the 'lord of tree'. The sculpture was designed by P.V.Ramachandran, a well-known terracotta artist from Kerala, with Krishnan Paloor serving as the chief sculptor.

The statue of Guruvayur Kesavan is dedicated to the deceased Elephant King, one of the most celebrated elephants in the stables of Lord Guruvayurappan and was crowned Gajaraja several times during its life. During the world famous Thrissur Pooram, Guruvayur Kesavan used to leads processions, adorned in exquisite ornaments and colorful decorations, amidst the resounding beats of traditional music and the cheering crowds of devotees.
