At a distance of 0.5 km from Guruvayur Railway Station, and 2 km from Guruvayur Temple, Parthasarathy Temple is a Hindu temple situated in the sacred town of Guruvayur in Kerala. It is one of the famous temples in Kerala, and among the must-include places in Guruvayur packages.
Parthasarathy Temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna, who is worshipped here in the form of Parthasarathy, the charioteer of Arjuna in the epic Mahabharata. It is believed that the idol of Lord Parthasarathy, who was the charioteer of Arjuna in the epic Mahabharata, was placed in this temple by Adi Shankaracharya. This act has made the temple a sacred pilgrimage site where devotees seek blessings and divine intervention in their lives.
The temple itself is a marvel of architecture and craftsmanship. It is designed in the shape of a chariot with many horses, and is a sight to behold. The intricate wood carvings, ornate sculptures, and vibrant paintings that adorn the walls and ceilings of the temple add to its beauty and grandeur.
The sanctum sanctorum of the temple houses the deity of Lord Parthasarathy with four arms, holding a Chakra and a Lotus. The image represents the majestic form of Vishnu revealed to Krishna's parents Vasudeva and Devaki around the time of the birth of Lord Krishna. The temple complex also features other shrines dedicated to various deities, adding to its spiritual aura. There is a seperate shrine dedicated to Adi Shankaracharya.
The temple celebrates several festivals, including Janmashtami, Kumbham Utsavam, and Ekadasi. During the Ekadasi festival, a procession is taken out from the Guruvayoor Temple in the morning, accompanied by three caparisoned elephants and Pancha Vadya, to the Parthasarathy Temple. After the Deeparadhana, a beautifully decorated chariot carrying the idol of Lord Krishna is taken in a procession from the Parthasarathy Temple back to the Guruvayoor Temple, completing a Parikrama of the temple tank.
