Established in 1973, Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary is bordered with Nagarhole WLS & Bandipur WLS in Karnataka and Mudumalai WLS in Tamilnadu. Occupying an area of 345 sq km, Wayanad WLS is the second largest WLS in Kerala. The sanctuary is separated into two disconnected parts, known as Upper Wayanad WLS and Lower Wayanad WLS. Elephant, tiger, leopard, jackal, gaur, sloth are the main fauna found here. This place is a heaven for bird watching lovers.
Upper Wayanad WLS at Tholpetty is known as Tholpetty Wildlife Range, it is 43 Kms from Kalpetta and 22 Kms from Mananthavady. Lower Wayanad WLS at Mathunga is known as Mathunga Wildlife Range, it is 36 Kms from Kalpetta and 15 Kms from Sulthan Bathery.
There are no Forest Department jeeps available for the safaris. Private jeeps can be hired at Tholpetty & Mathunga checkposts (Rs. 200-300 per trip) where guides can also be hired (Rs. 100 per day). No night halts and trekking are allowed in the sanctuary.
Timings: 6-9 AM and 3-6 PM.
