At a distance of 20 Kms from Kalpetta, Banasura Dam is the largest earth dam in India and second largest in Asia. The dam was built across the Karamanthodu River, a tributary of Kabani River.
The dam was built in 1979 to support the Kakkayam Hydroelectric Power Project and satisfy the demand for irrigation and drinking water of the region. The reservoir is marked with a cluster of small size islands. These islands with the background of the Banasura hill provide a mesmerizing sight to the tourists.
Boating facilities are available at the Banasura Dam. The dam is a place of great natural beauty. The dam is near Aruval, which is connected by few buses with Kalpetta.
