About Brindavan Gardens

At a distance of 16 km from Srirangapatna, & 19 km from Mysore, Brindavan Gardens is a famous & beautiful garden laid out below the Krishnaraja Sagar Dam in Karnataka. This is one of the best tourist places to visit in Mysore, and among the must-include places in Srirangapatna Tour Packages.

History of Brindavan Gardens

Sir Mirza Ismail, the then Diwan of Mysore wanted to beautify the area around KRS Dam. Therefore, the construction of Brindavan Garden was started in the year 1927 by the Department of Horticulture and was completed in 1932. The designs of Brindavan Gardens have been inspired by the breathtaking Shalimar Bagh of Kashmir which was created in the ancient Mughal Style. Now, the garden is maintained by the Cauvery Irrigation Department, Government of Karnataka. The garden was renovated in 2005 at a cost of Rs. 50 million which included sprucing up the musical fountain using a digitized system and repairs of dysfunctional fountains.

Layout of Brindavan Gardens

Spread over an area of 150 acres, the Brindavan Gardens is considered one of the best gardens in India, and among the prime places to visit in Srirangapatna. The garden is divided into various parts - the main gate area, South Brindavan, North Brindavan, and Children's Garden. The main gate area is inspired by the India Gate of New Delhi. There is a rose garden on both sides of the main gate. The area near the Cauvery Statue is the South Brindavan which boasts magnificent huge water fountains, and terrace gardens of differing styles. On the slopes of the terraces, one can see Bougainvillea and allamanda plants, while the lawn in the terrace garden has flower beds and patterned hedges and in the center, you can see Cypress plants. South Brindavan also has a glass house that consists of various ornamental plants which are used in the garden. The Children's Park is situated just beside the South Brindavan, and is an apt place for kids to play and enjoy, with its slides, concrete animals, birds, etc., and various other items. North Brindavan is the most attractive area of the gardens as it comprises four vast terrace gardens, with each terrace garden offering a breathtaking view of lush green lawns, flourishing flower beds, decorated hedges, and ornamental trees. What makes these gardens even more attractive are the various fountains illuminated with colourful lights. The garden also has a wonderful palace in the southern park which is now converted into a 4-star luxury hotel called Royal Orchid.

Light Show & Musical Fountain

The Musical Fountain, located in the North Brindavan Garden, is the main attraction of Brindavan Garden. Coupled with laser lights, these fountains are synchronized to music and go live at the time when the garden is lit up. The fountains are maintained by the water pressure from the dam and are operated through a controller. The songs played range from soulful instrumentals to patriotic songs. On weekdays, you will get to enjoy the scintillating show for one hour from 6.30 PM to 7.30 PM while on weekends, the show extends by one hour and the timings are 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM.

Boating

Visitors can enjoy a boat ride in the lake in the midst of the garden that connects the both north & south gardens. A concrete footpath is laid on the side of this lake. This lake is fishing restricted area, so you might find big carp, catfish, etc. One can take a Boat ride to reach the Musical Fountain Place, and then return walking.
