At a distance of 24 Kms from Kemmangundi & 28 Kms from Chikmagalur, Baba Budangiri (also known as Dattagiri & Chandra Drona Parvatha) is one of the highest mountain peaks in South India at an altitude of 1864 meters. It's part of Baba Budangiri Range Hills.
The peak is named after the Muslim saint, Baba Budan who resided here 150 years ago. Mullayanagiri (12 Kms from Chikmagalur, on the way to Baba Budangiri) is the highest peak in Baba Budangiri Range with an altitude of 1930 meters (the tallest peak in Karnataka). Mullayanagiri is a famous trekking destination in Karnataka.
Baba Budan was a 17th century Sufi, revered by Muslims, whose shrine is at Baba Budangiri. According to legend, he introduced coffee to India by bringing beans from the port of Mocha, Yemen. The place is also important for Hindus as Dattatreya Peetha. The annual festival is attended by both Hindus and Muslims with great honor.
