At a distance of 57 km from Bangalore, Sri Prasanna Venkateswara Swamy Temple is a Hindu temple situated in Chikka Tirupati. It is one of the famous temples in Karnataka, and among the prominent Pigrimage sites near Bangalore.
Sri Prasanna Venkateswara Swamy Temple is dedicated to Lord Venkateshwara, an avatar of Lord Vishnu. The temple is considered similar to the Tirupathi Venkateswara temple. Chikka Tirupati meaning 'Small Tirupathi' in Kannada as it is the miniature version of the Venkateswara Temple, Tirupathi in Andhra Pradesh. Lord Vishnu is worshipped here as Venkateshwara and his consort Lakshmi as Alamelumangamma. All rituals and ceremonies performed at Tirumala are also conducted at this temple.
According to legend, the site is associated with the episode of Kandava Dahana from the Hindu epic Mahabharata. During this event, Takshaka, the king of snakes, managed to escape the forest with minor injuries and subsequently cursed Agni, the fire god, to lose his divinity. Following the advice of Lord Shiva, Agni prayed to Lord Vishnu in this region and was able to restore his divinity. Devotees suffering from Naga Dosha visit this temple to seek forgiveness for their sins.
The temple is constructed in the Dravidian architectural style and features a five-tiered gopura. Surrounding the temple are two precincts. The sanctum sanctorum contains the idol of Lord Venkateshwara in a standing position. A notable aspect of this temple is that the right hand of Lord Venkateswara is raised in an Abhayahastha mudra, contrasting with the downward-facing Varada mudra seen in Tirumala Tirupathi. The Garuda Mantapa houses the image of Garuda, the eagle vehicle of Venkateshwara, positioned to face the presiding deity. A temple tank is situated to the north of the temple.
The principal festival celebrated at this temple is the Brahmotsava, which occurs annually on Shravana Shaniwaara. During this festival, the images of the presiding deities are paraded through the streets surrounding the temple in a grand chariot.
