At a distance of 90 Kms from Coimbatore, 50 Kms from Pollachi & 516 Kms from Chennai, Amaravathi Dam & Reservoir is located at Amaravathi Nagar in Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary. The dam is surrounded by Annamalai Hills & Palani Hills and offer wonderful view of the valleys.
The dam was built in 1957 across the Amaravathi River. The Reservoir and the Chinnar, Thennar and Pambar rivers that drain into it are known for South India's largest wild breeding population of Mugger Crocodiles. The Amaravathi Sagar Crocodile Farm is the largest Crocodile nursery in India with about 100 crocodiles. Established in 1976, Crocodile Farm is 1 km before the Amaravathy Dam.
There is a well laid-out park near the dam with tranquil surroundings. Amaravathi Nagar is connected by bus with Pollachi vial Udumalpet. More bus connections are available from Udumalpet.
