Mount Harriet National Park was originally a reserve forest and it was established as a national park in the year 1979. Sprawling over an area of 47 sq. km, Mount Harriet was once the summer headquarters of the Chief Commissioner during the British Raj. The park is named in commemoration of Harriet Tytler, the second wife of Robert Christopher Tytler, a British army officer, naturalist and photographer, who was appointed Superintendent of the Convict Settlement at Port Blair in the Andamans from April 1862 to February 1864. Harriet is remembered for her work in documenting the monuments of Delhi and for her notes at the time of the Revolt of 1857 in India.

The construction of the Cellular Jail was started by the British in 1896 and was completed in 1906. The prison was used by the British especially to exile political prisoners to the remote archipelago. The Anthropological museum in Port Blair was started in the year 1975-76. This small museum offers a profound and informative portrait of island's local community of tribes like Jarawas, Sentinelese, Great Andamanese and the Onges. These tribes are considered as one of the oldest in the world.

The Chatham Saw Mill was established in 1883 by the British with the second hand imported machines to meet the local requirement of timber for construction works. During the West colonial period, British used this mill to convert huge quantity of timber for catering the various needs of London, New York and various other cities.

During the Second World War, Japanese bombarded and destroyed the mill in 1942, in which the many workers were succumbed to death. Later on, after the year 1945, the Japanese occupied the islands and the mill was revived again. At a distance 61 km from Port Blair, 6.5 km from Havelock Ferry Ghat and 13 km from Radhanagar Beach, Kalapathar Beach is a deserted beach situated on one corner of Havelock Island in Andamans.

Kalapathar Beach is one of the popular beaches of Havelock Island. The beach gets its name from the surrounding village, which is Kalapathar Village and the black rocks that adorn the coastline here. The beach is small but the way to beach is very good. The beach is not recommended to swim because of the rocks at the beach. One can get the mesmerizing views of sunset at this beach. As the beach is not so crowded, couples can enjoy a romantic walk and families can spend some peaceful moments.

One can reach Kalapathar Beach by hiring an auto or rent a bike / bicycle from Havelock Jetty. It takes about 30 minutes to reach Kalapathar.

The name of the island was derived from the name of a marine surveyor, Sir Daniel Ross. In 1857, the British took possession of three islands around Port Blair and Ross Island was one of them. This small Ross Island served as the capital of the Andaman Islands from 1858 to 1941 under the British rule. An earthquake in 1941 shook the island and huge buildings collapsed due to the natural calamity. After that, the British shifted their capital to Port Blair, near Ross Island.
